Over the years, as I’ve listened to hundreds of artists, I began to understand that finding and nurturing collectors had to do with making a paradigm shift from “me” to “them.”

Mosaic artist, George Fishman, talked with me on his “Mosaic of Art Radio Show” about just this topic: “Who is Your Audience: Making the shift from me to them.”

I’m so excited by what just happened on the First Day of smARTist 2009 that I simply have to share some of it with you.

The five panel members…

as far afield from each other as Molly Gordon in Seattle, Guillermo Cuellar in New England, Nancy Marmalejo and Lucia Cappacionne in Southern California, and artist Shirley Williams in Ontario, Canada…

…seemed to be flowing from an interconnected river of knowledge as they responded to the questions that came straight from this year’s smARTist participants.

I found the panel’s answers to be practical in their collective wisdom, that only when we…build a foundation of clarity are we able to pursue our dreams successfully.

Here are a few of the questions they answered today

What are the essentials in getting clear? Is it all a matter of knowing more about the business of art?

How do you know when a plan or opportunity is the right one for you? How do you differentiate between an intuition and a fear reaction to an opportunity?

There seems to be a trend developing in the US galleries to “buy local”. Is this a good time for artists outside the US to consider entering the US market?

What are some tips for staying centered and motivated in these strange economic times?

What advice do you have for artists struggling with consistency? Is consistency even important?

I wonder what ideas the panel has for addressing the current recession and whether they see any opportunities for fine artists to grow their businesses right now and in the next few years.

Would you like to hear their answers?

It’s really not too late. Since we record everything and load the sessions onto the website to hear at your convenience, you can register right now for the smARTist Telesummit 2009 and miss nothing!

smARTist only stops at Your Station once a year.

So, just Click Here to register before the train leaves.

You will get the 2 Panel Days, plus 11 Keynote Presentations – all for less than the price of a weekend workshop (where you only get 1 Presenter!)

As one artist told me about smARTist last year:
I was so afraid of spending the money with the economy declining,
(I am my only support) but I did it and I am just so pleased.
I am absolutely LOVING the smARTist Telesummit.

I am getting so many ideas as I listen to the lessons in my car, and at home,
until it all really sinks in. Thank you so much. It was money really well spent!

What many people outside the arts don’t understand, is that succeeding in this profession takes just as much discipline as it does for the CEO, Athlete, Lawyer, Doctor.

In most cases it takes more, since you already have the day job, and for your night job your calling happens to be to a discipline that we almost never feel equal to, in which we regularly disappoint ourselves, and from which… the check is always late-often by a decade or two.

Success = No Screwing Around

Define “success” how you want, but to me it means succeeding aesthetically first, and financially later-which for most artists simply means turning some form of profit.

However you do define it, this kind of discipline is no screwing around. You don’t get there by going to all the parties, hanging out in all the bars, and talking about all the great work you want to do.

Work First, Talk Later

If you believe in yourself, if your goals are realistic, and if you’re driven, then you clamp your mouth shut and work your butt off. Why?

Because you’re giving something to the world that is bigger than you, and more important than you. In a sense you are serving others, and that requires great discipline. The end result will speak for you. Then you can go to all the parties and bars… at least until you start the next piece.

You Are Not Who They Say You Are

The misconception is that artists indulge in substance abuse, are hopelessly idealistic, and devoid of discipline. This is utter hogwash. Some of the most disciplined people I’ve known have been sculptors, painters, glass-blowers, etc.

Not only did they work very hard, but man they had guts, laying everything on the line in a risky profession: their finances, their dreams, their futures. Some realized their dream, some did not, but every one of them lived with courage and dignity and often a self-effacing humor.

Keep Your Sanity-laugh!

It’s that last quality that will often save your sanity when all else is failing. Oddly, it’s also a quality that can allow you to laugh off your failures, and persevere through to success.

Sure this is a tough life, full of sacrifices and hardship (although not like those of a Vietnamese rice farmer). And… I wouldn’t trade it for a million bucks (though I might for two).
