In the First Part of this three-part blog series, I talked about how building relationships through the various platforms and connections in the social media world, as ambiguous as that world might feel, builds trust with our future buyers and collectors.
I’d even go so far as to say that building relationships is the key benefit of social media where its various platforms allows us to develop connections that can lead to unforeseen opportunities.
People – Fans –Follow Us That We Are Not Aware Of
Have you ever been somewhere socially and someone comes up to you and starts talking about your work or latest activity because they have seen your posts on Facebook or another platform? This always takes me aback. These are the people who see us regularly online but they never let us know that they are watching.
Recently, I had one of these out-of-the-blue connections when I attended a local art opening. The director of the art center came up to me and stated that he liked my current work. (I didn’t know he was watching.) He also implied that this work might be something they would like to exhibit in 2015.
Because this art director had seen me on Facebook, and then in-person, suddenly I an opportunity opens up that I didn’t even realize existed.
Wow! I was both stunned by his comment and excited.
Another notch on my “Show-up Consistently” bedpost was marked off while that internal voice of mine reinforced what I was doing and told me, “Keep going, keep posting your images. Something will happen.” The director’s comments had motivated me to stick to my “show-up consistently” plan.
Then, when this same local art center sent out a “Call for Proposals” a few months ago, I did not hesitate to apply because of what the director had said to me. I knew the competition would be stiff because this art center had expanded significantly with much success in the past year; however, I felt encouraged by the connection I’d made.
Drum~m~m~m roll ~ the results came in and I was chosen for a two-person show in May 2015! I am totally jazzed by this unexpected opportunity.
A second surprise arrived in my Facebook message box last week from someone I had not heard from in a couple of years. We have begun a conversation about a potential commission. She too had been following me, yet I had no idea.
If nothing else, these recent connections are proof to me that my consistent game plan on social media is working.
In Case Study Part 3: Showing-Up Consistently ~ It Works! I’ll tell you my secrets for social media success–those few tips I’ve learned that work time and again!
But before then, please tell me… what practical outcomes – or faniciful outcomes – have you gotten from your social media presence?
I’d love to hear more success stories to add to mine!
When you do show up on your social media platforms, wouldn’t it be good to have more to add to the conversation?
