Sketchbook
This careful, humble
attention
that’s required
to draw correctly
is fine-tuning my sight,
causing my vision
to become
wonderfully, enjoyably
receptive…
Tracing sensuously
the edges and living lines
of all the sights
that pour into my eye and mind.
It’s very satisfying and endlessly fascinating
as an artist
to just look at the wonders of this world,
and to appreciate
the abundant gifts of vision.

I adore lilies – have about four or five different kinds in my gardens – love the curve of the pedals – such grace.
I have also painted many waterlilies too.

Joni, Thanks for your comments! I went over to your site to see your paintings of lillies, but couldn’t find any. I’ll keep looking.
I haven’t looked at my sketches of flowers in a while. Dusted them off to post them and it reminded me how much I love to draw flowers. Think I’ll start again.
And talking to you and looking at your site makes me think I should be paying more heed to the glorious lines and forms of the horse. I have drawn many zebras, but not many horses.
So much to do!

Lori,
Wonderful, graceful, clean contour lines….
are you working from photographs, live flowers, or from your imagination?

Michael, These two sketches are done from life; from direct observation. I look at the flower and I see the grace and I echo it as best I can with simple, quick sketches. Fast and loose, in a relaxed manner.
Some work better than others. But all were totally engaging to do.
